Tomorrow - Carney’s 1st official day
The Governor General’s office has confirmed that tomorrow will be Mark Carney’s first official day on the job as PM. She’ll swear him in at 11am at Rideau Hall.
Canada hits back
Canada is putting tariffs on almost $30-billion dollars in U.S. goods in retaliation for President Trump putting a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum yesterday morning. The tariffs will hit U.S. steel, computers, sports equipment and certain cast iron products.
What do Americans use all that steel and aluminum for?
From cans and airplanes, to washing machines and skyscrapers, the Associated Press breaks down what all of that steel and aluminum gets used for once it gets to the United States.

Bank of Canada cuts key rate
As expected, the Bank of Canada cut its benchmark interest rate for the 7th consecutive time. The quarter point cut brings the rate down to 2.75%. The bank’s outlook is anything but upbeat, with Governor Tiff Macklem saying: “Depending on the extent and duration of new U.S. tariffs, the economic impact could be severe.”
Dog bite guilty plea
A woman has pled guilty to some charges after a child was attacked by a dog at Toronto’s Little Norway Park a year ago. CityNews reports that the woman was inside the playground area with her dog off leash when the animal attacked, and afterwards she took off. The nine-year old had serious, live-changing injuries. The woman who owns the god has pled guilty to several charges including criminal negligence.
Blood moon tonight
If you’re a night owl, see if you can catch a glimpse a rare “blood moon” tonight. It happens when the earth lines up between the Sun and Moon, making the moon appear blood red. It’ll be the first total lunar eclipse visible from Ontario in three years, and the maximum eclipse takes place at 2:58am.

“Biggest problem” in Canadian Finance: Wealthy Barber
Wealthy Barber author David Chilton is out with a new podcast series, and in one episode he and a guest discuss what he calls the “single biggest problem in the world of Canadian Finance”. The author says it’s the fees people pay on actively managed investments like some mutual funds. He says over time they can eat away at 30-45% of someone’s retirement capital.
How much income you need to afford rent
Narcity has analysed how much you’d need to make to afford rent in a number of southern Ontario cities using the federal government’s suggested rule that no more than 35% of your before tax income should go to rent. The average rent in downtown Toronto is $2,206, meaning you’d need an income of $75,634. Markham is the most expensive spot to live, with London being the most affordable on the list.

Omega-3 + Vitamin D + Exercise
A new study out of Switzerland found the combo of Omega-3 supplements, vitamin D supplements and regular exercise might be able to slow biological aging in people over the age of 70 by up to four months. Biological aging is how old someone’s body seems regardless of their actual age. Four months might not seem like a lot, but the authors say it could have effects for overall public health strategies.
