Another big tax hike | Close call in the sky | Livin' on the edge... of insolvency

Chow guarantee: 6.9% tax hike in Toronto will ‘change lives’
Olivia Chow says the 6.9% proposed tax hike this year will mean “change in Torontonians’ lives today.” The Mayor had said another sizeable property tax increase was likely given budget holes.
Could Trump tariffs lead to an Ontario election?
Premier Doug Ford says he’s prepared to go to the polls to ask Ontarians for a new mandate if the province is considering major spending to offset the impact of tariffs. Ford says: “I think, if it comes to it, and we have to spend tens of billions of dollars, we go to the people. Let the people decide, it’s their money. It’s not the government’s.”
Are we ready for those tariffs?
Fresh from her meetings with Donald Trump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says we need “to be prepared” for tariffs on January 20th, but it seems not every Canadian leader is aligned in how to respond. While many leaders like Doug Ford are saying everything is on the table, including energy exports, Smith says she won’t stand for that, and it could cause a national unity crisis.

Mark Carney appeared on The Daily Show in the U.S. last night, where he talked about himself as a potential Liberal leadership contender, but fell short of actually declaring it. The Hill Times reports that he’ll officially declare his intentions on Thursday in Edmonton.
The Canadian Press is reporting that Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne will declare his intention to run today, and that Chrystia Freeland will announce her plans to run in the “coming days”.

Halton Regional Police are investigating what they are calling a ‘shocking’ home invasion in Oakville. They say on Friday at about 3:00 a.m. three armed suspects broke into a home in the Coronation Drive and John Laird Circle area. The masked suspects entered the bedrooms of the sleeping residents and pointed firearms at the victims, demanding valuables and keys to their vehicles.
FAA investigating after two planes approaching Phoenix airport Saturday got too close
The Delta Airlines and United Airlines flights were both approaching Phoenix Sky Harbor International Saturday around 1pm, and both were attempting to land on runway 8. The air traffic controller came to the rescue, and both flights landed safely!
Record weather damage in 2024
The Canadian Press reports that insured damage caused by severe weather hit a record $8.55-billion dollars in Canada last year. A massive hailstorm in Calgary, Hurricane Debby, and the Jasper wildfire each caused more than a billion dollars in damage.

MNP says half of Canadians are $200 or less away from insolvency. The insolvency trustee’s Consumer Debt Index has dropped to the second-lowest level ever, and half of Canadians believe they won’t be able to cover all of their expenses in the next year without taking on more debt. 41% are also worried about someone in their home losing their job.
