Ford makes history | March comes in like a lion | Do you “doom spend”?

Doug Ford gets majority #3
Premier Ford has done it again, winning his 3rd consecutive majority. The premier set a goal of a larger majority at the start of the campaign, but he ended up with a smaller one. The win is still a historic one, with the last time the party won three consecutive majorities being 54 years ago. The Liberals reclaimed official party status, but leader Bonnie Crombie didn’t win her seat in Mississauga.
Here are the latest seat counts as of this morning from the Elections Ontario website:
🟦 PC – 80 seats, 42.97% of popular vote
🟧 NDP – 27 seats, 18.55% of popular vote
🟥 Liberal – 14 seats, 29.95% of popular vote
🟩 Green – 2 seats, 4.83% of popular vote

Looks like March is coming in like a lion. Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for the GTA. A snowstorm this afternoon could bring 10cms in time for the evening commute. Temperatures are also expected to plunge this weekend. Let’s just hope the month leaves like a lamb 😊
Tariff latest

Donald Trump says tariffs will still kick in on March 4th, even though he said April 2nd yesterday. This is despite Canada’s Public Safety Minister says Canada has met any border standards President Trump was demanding, which was what the President initially tied the tariffs to.

President Trump says he doesn’t want anyone in Canada saying anything bad about his friend Wayne Gretzky who believes in Canada remaining a country, not the 51st state. Trump says “the great one… supports Canada the way it is, as he should, even though it’s not nearly as good as it could be.”
Measles outbreak in Ontario
Public Health Ontario says the province is “experiencing a multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak. So far this year, there have been 119 confirmed and 23 probable cases in the province. That compares to 101 confirmed cases in the entire decade between 2013 and 2023. Public Health says there’s been an uptick in the number of cases of measles globally, and its often associated with travel due to high immunization levels in Canada.

Don’t “doom spend”
Seems lots of Americans are worried about upcoming tariffs and it’s causing them to “doom spend”. CNBC says 1 in 5 Americans are making impulse purchase out of anxiety about the future. The fear of higher prices is causing some people to make major purchases earlier than planned or stockpile in case prices go up, but experts warn there are a lot of unknowns about potential tariffs and don’t advise straining consumer budgets right now.
How does your credit card balance compare?
According to TransUnion, the average Canadian is carrying a credit card balance of $4,681, which is almost 6% higher than the year before. The company says Millennial and Gen Z consumers have seen their balances rise by 10% year-over-year.

Working too much?
Cleveland Clinic has put together a piece on the potential harms of working too much. They include high cortisol levels which can increase blood pressure and brain fog. Some common side effects of overworking include not enough sleep or exercise, not eating enough during the day, and neglected relationships.
Want to give up sugar?
A Vogue writer shares what happened when she stopped eating sugar after describing herself as “addicted” to it. She says the first few days were hard, but within a week she felt “fabulous”. She felt she could concentrate longer and found it easier to get out of bed in the morning. She offers some tips and alternatives to sugar here.
