MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

Canada proud: 4 Nations final face-off goes tonight

Tonight’s final will be a rematch between Canada and the United States. On the line: a championship and bragging rights. Not to mention sticking it to the USA. Sportsnet has put together five storylines to watch. The CN Tower will be lit red and white in honour of the big game tonight!

Passengers lawyer-up & airline offers cash

Canadian Press reports that a couple of Canadian passengers from Monday’s plane crash have hired Toronto lawyers who specialise in aviation law. The law firm says its clients were hurt in the crash, and it’s working with a U.S. law firm that has been hired by American passengers. Separately, the airline is offering passengers US$30,000 each, saying it “has no strings attached and does not affect rights.”

Advance polls open today

Elections Ontario says advance polls open today and run until Saturday. You can use this link to enter your postal code and find out where you can vote early.

“Dictator” vs. “Disinformation”

The U.S. and Ukrainian Presidents aren’t on great terms right now.  Donald Trump has called Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” who has done a “terrible job”, and Zelensky has fired back saying Trump is “living in a disinformation space”. Ukrainian elections have been suspended since the country is under martial law through the war.

Pope: “Slight improvement”

The Vatican says Pope Francis is showing “slight improvement” as he recovers from pneumonia in hospital. He also got a visit from Italian PM Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday.

Canada buys first batch of human bird flu vaccine

The feds have bought 500,000 doses of the vaccine as part of a contingency plan to protect people who may be at increased risk of exposure. The first Canadian human case was reported in November, and there’s been no reports of person-to-person spread globally. Right now, mass deployment of the vaccine isn’t recommended.

Get on board!

With just a couple of weeks left as Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has launched a plan to connect Toronto and Quebec City with high-speed rail. It’ll be the biggest infrastructure project in Canadian history, with the six-year design and development phase costing $3.9-billion. A consortium has also been picked to work on the line.

KEEP THE CHANGE

Luxury brands lose steam in China

The Wall Street Journal reports that some of the world’s top luxury brands are seeing double-digit sales drops in Asian markets. A slower economy and frustration at high prices is seen as driving the decrease.

Gen Z’s love pre-nups

A new report from TD Bank finds that half of Gen Z Canadians want a pre-nup, which compares to a national average of 31%. 65% of Gen Z’s also say their partner’s net worth is an important consideration when starting a relationship.

Ultra-processed foods to consider

Ultra-processed foods get talked about a lot, and often get lumped together as a single category, but Health.com has put together a list of five of them that are good for you. It includes whole grain bread, hummus, yogurt, and canned beans.

AND… ANOTHER THING!

Tomato juice on the plane, anyone?

If you like a tomato juice while on a flight, turns out you’re not alone. According to AllRecipes.com, Lufthansa serves as much tomato juice as beer on its planes, but why? One theory is that your sense of smell gets weaker on a plane, so the strong taste of tomato juice makes it a more flavourful choice in the sky. Another theory is that umami is the one flavour that isn’t impacted in the sky, which is something tomato juice is known for. It might also just be a habit for many fliers.
