MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE
Lots more rain today, back to snow tomorrow
Environment Canada has issued another special weather statement warning of more rain today - 15 to 25 mm - combined with melting snow. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall so we could see ponding and flooding. Then, we’ll see rapidly falling temperatures, strong winds, snow and local blowing snow tonight into Thursday, resulting in surfaces becoming icy and slippery.
Trump justifies Tariffs to Congress
Donald, “This is a very dumb thing to do”
PM Trudeau had a direct message for U.S. President Trump quoting the Wall Street Journal (which Trudeau notes he doesn’t often agree with): “They point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.”
Let the retaliation begin!
As promised, the federal government is immediately slapping 25% tariffs on $30-billion in goods, followed by another $125-billion in three weeks. The Prime Minister also says Canada will file a claim with the World Trade Organization through the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement to fight the tariffs. Donald Trump reacted by saying the U.S. will immediately respond to Canada’s retaliation by increasing the tariffs by “a like amount”.
Clear the shelves and cancel those contracts!
The province is following through on Doug Ford’s promises to ban U.S. booze in the LCBO, stop American companies from receiving $30-billion in government contracts, and ripping up the StarLink internet deal. Ford also says he’s soon going to slap a 25% surcharge on energy going to the states and will cut off the power entirely if the tariffs are still in place by next month.
More staff for 911
The City of Toronto plans to hire more staff to improve 911 response times. CityNews reports that the average time for an emergency call to Toronto Police to be answered was 1:07, which doesn’t meet the National Emergency Number Association’s standard of having 90% of calls picked up within 15 seconds.

Biggest iceberg runs aground
BBC News reports that the world’s biggest iceberg has run aground. It’s about twice the size of London, England and is stuck in shallow waters near the remote British island of South Georgia. Experts are concerned that if the iceberg breaks up, it could pose a risk to passing ships. Scientists also believe it’s full of nutrients inside the ice, which could create an “explosion of life in the ocean” as it melts.

Crypto scams tend to hit younger victims: BBB
The Better Business Bureau tells Global News that the demographic losing the most amount of money on crypto scams tends to be aged 18 to 44, with an average loss of $2,500. A BBB spokesperson tells Global they were surprised by the findings: “Often we think of younger Canadians as being more savvy — they grew up with technology and they typically understand it a little bit more than older Canadians.”
HEALTHY START
The Balkan Breakfast
Vogue has declared the Balkan Breakfast the healthiest of 2025. What is it? It contains whole and raw foods like vegetables, meat, cheese, eggs, and some whole grains often served charcuterie style. It’s a good choice since the combination of protein and fiber can keep you feeling full until lunch.
Facial taping to prevent wrinkles?
Health.com investigates the science of whether applying tape to your face overnight will reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Apparently, some people have been trying the technique, which has been used for a long time to treat conditions like Bell’s Palsy. The article concludes that there is no study to prove that it works for wrinkle reduction, and any improvement would only be temporary.
