Here's a race one man sure didn't win
Top of the Morning! What a weekend, huh? Another beautiful day on the way... sunny with a high of 24.
MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE
E-bikes up in flames
About 20 e-bikes caught fire in an underground parking garage in the Eglinton and Spadina area around 12:30 this morning. One person suffered serious injuries.
Didn’t make it to the race on time
A Kitchener man who left home at 5:30am still didn’t make it in time for this weekend’s Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which he says is because of road closures downtown. He even planned ahead and pre-booked a parking spot for the event. He figures he’s out $200 in registration and pre-paid parking fees. This year’s event set a record, with 30,000 runners participating.
From snowboard champ to drug lord?
A former Canadian Olympic snowboarder turned alleged drug lord is still on the lam from the FBI. Ryan Wedding allegedly shipped lots of cocaine across the continent and is accused of multiple killings.
Supersize it please!
Another potential break for borrowers is on the way this week. The Bank of Canada is expected to announce a rate cut on Wednesday, and the experts think it could be a big one. A half percentage point cut is expected. A big drop in inflation and a slower economy are seen as drivers of the move.
Deadly Markham shooting
A Markham man was shot dead outside his house near McCowan and 14th Avenue on Saturday night. Police say he was known to them and think the shooting was targeted. Someone with the same name as the victim reportedly also applied for a tow truck license a few years ago.
Summer just coming to an end for politicians at Queen’s Park
Provincial politicians head back to the legislature today after a 19-week long summer break, although you wouldn’t know it from all the talk about digging a tunnel under the 401 and putting wine & coolers in corner stores. There’s a bunch of speculation about an election in the spring, but nothing concrete.
Lights out & hurricane hit in Cuba
We’re thinking about all the people in Cuba this morning. The country’s electricity grid went down over the weekend, leaving millions of people in the dark. Officials still aren’t sure when it will be fully restored. A power plant failure linked to increased demand and a lack of maintenance is said to be behind the blackout. To make matters worse, Hurricane Oscar is hitting the country too.

KEEP THE CHANGE
Vacation value
Skyscanner’s list of the top value vacation destinations for Canadians is out with spots in Italy, Portugal and Columbia making the list. Despite finances being tight these days, Canadians love to travel, with 83% of us planning to travel as much or more next year as this one. See the full list of destinations here.
A permanent move to Portugal
Seems the Portuguese government is doing everything it can to bring in “digital nomads” and stop young workers from leaving the country. Two years ago, it launched a plan to welcome expat workers, and now it’s proposing tax breaks for anyone under age 35 making less than $42,000. One Brit who made the move says life “is all much easier in Portugal.”
HEALTHY START
Standing desks and your health
A study has found that standing desks don’t reduce the risk of stroke or heart failure. Research involving 80,000 people in the UK found that standing while working doesn’t offset being inactive, and might actually increase the risk of blood clots in the leg.
Fried Rice Syndrome
Will leftover rice make you sick? Some recent TikTok content is raising concerns about eating reheated rice and pasta dishes. Food safety experts break down the actual risks here.
AND… ANOTHER THING
The “October Theory”
Usually, New Year’s is when we rethink our goals and plan for the coming year, but a lot of people are starting the process now. It’s called the “October Theory” on social media. Starting the process 90 days before the start of the New Year is seen as having a better chance of setting you up for success.
