MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

JOLT! Ontario slaps 25% surcharge on electricity to the U.S. and warns it could go higher

“Believe me when I say I do not want to do this,” said Premier Doug Ford when announcing the price increase on electricity to 1.5 million homes in three U.S. states. Ford went on to say “I feel terrible for the American people, because it’s not the American people who started this trade war. It’s one person who’s responsible, that’s President Trump.” Ford says it’ll cost the average impacted American about $100 a month and will raise $300,000 to $400,000 in revenue for Ontario each day.

Stocks tank Monday over recession fears

The S&P 500 dropped almost 3% and the Nasdaq composite around 4% in a rough day on Wall Street. The S&P/TSX Composite also slipped 1.5%. Concerns and uncertainty over President Trump’s policy flip-flops are seen as major drivers for the drops.

“Massive cyber-attack” hits X

Elon Musk says his X platform has been hit by a “massive cyber-attack” which caused system outages. He says the attack was done with a lot of resources and that “either a large, coordinated group and/or country is involved.”

“Quick” transition for Carney

KEEP THE CHANGE

What about those Bay gift cards & points?

Hudson’s Bay has filed for creditor protection, and its filing shows lots of us have outstanding gift cards from the store -- $24.3-million worth. The Globe and Mail reports that the cards are still active and will be honoured, and in fact, the store is still selling new ones. If you have Hudson’s Bay Rewards points, it’s a different story. That program is on pause during the creditor protection process. Points outstanding are worth $58.6-million.

Pricey pups

Money.ca has a list of the most expensive dog breeds in Canada. The French Bulldog tops the list with an average price of $4,000-$6,000! These dogs often require surgery to deal with breathing issues, which runs an additional $2,000-$3,000. To see the rest of the 15 dogs on the list, click here.

So much for the “French Paradox”

The French Public Health Agency says only 11% of that country’s population has optimal cardiovascular health, with the rate falling to 4% among people with lower levels of education. The report also finds women’s health is getting worse, which is attributed to increasing adoption of behaviours like smoking and lower levels of exercise.
