Look out Olivia!

Top of the Morning! A crisp start to the day. Lots of sunshine with an expected high of 11.

MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

Look out Olivia Chow - you might soon have to ask Doug Ford if you want to install more bike lanes in T.O.!

The Ontario government is introducing legislation that will require municipalities to receive provincial approval before removing traffic lanes to install new bike paths.  The Transportation Minister says the plan will bring “informed decision making and oversight to a process that is frankly, out of control.”

And while we’re on the topic of getting moving again…

The province is also studying the creation of a 120 km/h design standard for new Ontario highways. If adopted, the standard for new highways would “allow vehicles to travel safely at speeds higher than 120 kilometres per hour” and “keep drivers safe.”

Uhh ohhh.  Did Doug Ford take on Taylor Swift?

The Premier is taking a hit after suggesting Swift “Stick to music.”  This, after Swift endorsed Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election.

Flu Floors some Leafs!

Tavares and Nylander just some of the Toronto Maple Leafs fighting some kind of bug over the past fews days.

Smash and dash

A driver has been arrested after smashing their car into a west-end home and then taking off.  It happened last night on Winona Drive.  Three other people also tried to flee…but all were arrested at the scene.

Have they lost their minds?  Maybe…but at least they’re going viral.

Video is going bonkers on social media showing two people on the illegal side of a safety fence at Niagara Falls taking pics and video earlier this month. (The mother of idiots is always pregnant).

KEEP THE CHANGE

More cuts coming?

Canada’s inflation rate slipped to 1.6% last month, which is the smallest year-over-year increase in prices since February 2021. A drop in the price of gas drove the numbers. It’s leading some experts to predict a half-point cut in the Bank of Canada rate later this month.

Even a subsidized minivan won’t cut it

Birth rates have been falling in developed countries around the world, particularly in Europe. Governments have been offering perks like cheap child care, extra vacation, lower taxes, and even subsidized loans and minivans to reverse the trend, with no luck. According to demographers, a fundamental cultural shift is what’s driving the trend, and it’s not just a financial choice.

HEALTHY START

Best time for a cup of joe

A study from a couple of years ago is making the rounds again on when the best time is for a cup of coffee.  It recommends drinking coffee after breakfast, not before, for better metabolism, and says that a strong coffee to get you going after a bad night’s sleep might mess with your blood sugar levels.

“Watching” out for flu and COVID

A number of Apple Watch users say the latest update on the device has predicted common illnesses like flu and COVID before symptoms even started. Users report the Vitals App highlighting what it calls “outliers”, particularly a higher wrist temperature, in the days before symptoms arrived. Apple doesn’t claim the watches can diagnose medical conditions.

AND ANOTHER THING…
