Monster storm

Top of the Morning! A crisp start to the day. Mainly sunny with a high of 16 degrees. We might see a sprinkle of rain this afternoon.

MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

Monster Milton

It is being described as the ‘storm of the century.’  Hurricane warning, storm surge warning and mandatory evacuation orders all in effect as monstrous Hurricane Milton tracks toward Florida.  The storm did weaken to a CAT 4 overnight, but is expected to regain strength as it targets Tampa.

‘Heinous’ behaviour…

An apparent incident of road rage leads to shots fired in North York Monday morning.  Two people are in hospital following a violent car chase that resulted in their vehicle flipping over while trying to escape.  The hunt is still on for the suspect shooter who took off in a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Don’t forget your Vitamin C!

No, we aren’t in the 1800s, but a case of scurvy has recently been diagnosed in Toronto, and the Canadian Medical Association is warning doctors to keep an eye out for more possible cases.  Here’s what you need to know about scurvy signs, symptoms and prevention.

Trash Pandas Get their Own Park!

A cute little play area near Yonge and Eglinton was called 'raccoon park' as a joke by area residents but the city actually made it official.  Just don’t take any snacks when you go to the park with the kiddies.

KEEP THE CHANGE!

Some folks (rich ones) are still buying houses

According to one Toronto agent, luxury home sales are still strong with prices up 4.7% in the first half of the year on homes priced over $8-million.  Strength is also being seen at the upper end of other Canadian markets.  The theory is buyers in that snack bracket tend to be less dependent on mortgages, and therefore less impacted by interest rates.

A new roof vs fancy countertops

Famous contractor Bryan Baeumler is urging people to think twice about where they drop their cash on home renos.  He says for years we’ve been upgrading the cosmetic stuff to add value to our homes, but now it’s time for a re-think.  Baeumler thinks higher quality roofs, appliances, furnaces and windows might be a better bet in the long-run as their costs only climb.  He says putting cash into quality materials and home efficiency now will have a greater payoff in the long run.

HEALTHY START

Will it be bacon or bagel for you for breakfast?

A new study finds the 'most important meal of the day’ could determine if you lose weight.  For women it’s about the protein.  The dudes get the carbs!

Doctor’s Notes

Family docs in Ontario report spending 19 hours per week on paperwork. A group of them have recently taken part in a provincially funded project to see if AI can help them out. The report found using AI could save them between 3-4 hours a week. Despite the results, privacy and data collection concerns as well as costs are leading to hesitation around using the technology.

Gonna make it to 100?

According to researchers, a girl born recently has about a 5% chance of making it to 100, and a boy has less than a 2% chance. We’ve seen major increases in life expectancy over the last century, but researchers now suggest we’re reaching the limits of human longevity and should focus on slowing the aging process and extending health span.

WILD WHEELS

Magic wagon

You either love’em or hate’em… minivans.  Probably the most practical vehicle for a family, but not exactly fun, fast, or stylish.  Mark Zuckerburg just bought one for his wife, or should we say had one made.  It’s a custom Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and wait ‘til you see those sliding doors!  Check it out here.
