Carney becomes PM at 11am ceremony

In addition to the PM getting sworn in this morning at Rideau Hall, so will Mark Carney’s new cabinet. It’s expected that the cabinet will be smaller than Justin Trudeau’s 37 member one. Carney is expected to call an election before parliament resumes in ten days.

Ford has a “very, very productive” meeting in Washington

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and federal officials left a meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying they feel more positive about the Canada-U.S. trading relationship.

“Canada is a sovereign state”: New U.S. Ambassador to Canada nominee

Pete Hoekstra, Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Ambassador to Canada has distanced himself from Trump’s 51st state talk at his senate confirmation hearing, acknowledging “Canada is a sovereign state – yes.” 

Measles surges in Ontario

Public Health Ontario is reporting 372 measles cases in the province, which is an increase of 195 cases since the end of February. There have been 31 hospitalizations, with 30 of those people being unvaccinated and the other person’s status unknown. Symptoms include fever, cough, rash, and red eyes.

Flipped plane lawsuit

A Houston man has filed a lawsuit against Delta Airlines after that Pearson plane crash.  The man’s lawyer says his client is still in hospital for treatment, and believes the first officer was in control of the aircraft when it crashed, not the captain, and he wants to know why. “My client was knocked out as a result of the crash. When he awoke, he was covered in jet fuel, suspended upside down in a smoke-filled cabin,” the passenger’s lawyer says.

Looks like a staycation summer!

CBC News reports that the “Buy Canadian” movement in the face of the U.S. trade war means provinces and territories are already seeing an increase in domestic tourism interest and increased summer bookings.

Tipping point on tips

A new study from H&R Block finds 94% of Canadians think tipping has gotten out of hand, and they’re annoyed by card machines prompting for tips when they never used to be requested. Canadians say that when they do tip, 9% is the average appropriate amount.

Hudson’s Bay points holders “dismayed”

Earlier this week, we told you how Hudson’s Bay’s rewards program was being “paused” through the creditor protection process. Toronto Today talked to shoppers at the chain’s flagship store who say they were being told the system was “down” or it was a “temporary issue”. The company says it’s now telling people it’s “paused”. They also spoke to an analyst who advises using your gift cards as soon as you can.

Eating more in front of the TV

Men’s Health reports on a study that shows we tend to eat more when watching TV, but more importantly, we also tend to eat more at our next meal too. Scientists think it’s because when we’re watching TV, we’re not paying full attention to what we’re eating so our brains don’t fully register it, which leads us to eating more later.
