MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

Trump tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum now in effect

The president's executive order went into place at 12:01 a.m. ET, hitting Canada with 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. This, hours after the White House confirmed Trump would not follow through on threats to double the tariffs after Ontario paused an electricity surcharge to the states.

“Olive Branch”

Ontario is temporarily suspending its 25% surcharge on electricity sent to some American states after U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick offered Premier Ford an “olive branch”. A Canadian delegation is going to meet in Washington later this week for trade talks. President Trump reacted to the 25% surcharge by doubling tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, but has since backed down. Trump called Ford a “very strong man” and he respects that he suspended the electricity surcharge.

Now Poilievre is getting in on the action

Neck-and-neck

A new poll shows the federal Conservatives and Liberals are both sitting at 37% support. The poll was done by Leger and was done just before Mark Carney was picked as the new Liberal leader. The poll was an online one, which according to experts can’t be given a margin of error since it doesn’t randomly sample the population.

Markets are “sick and tired” of tariff chaos

Fewer trips to the U.S.

The latest data from StatsCan shows a 23% drop in Canadian residents making return car trips to the U.S. compared to a year ago. The number of trips also slipped in January.

School social media lawsuit to proceed

A judge says a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit launched by 14 Ontario school boards against several social media companies can proceed. The platforms wanted the suit tossed out. The schools allege the platforms are negligent in that they’re designed to rewire how children think and are created for compulsive use. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
