MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE
Special weather statement: Significant rain and mild temps today
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for today, warning of up to 20 mm of rain and mild temps. Isolated thunderstorms also possible. The rain, combined with melting snow and the limited ability of the frozen ground to absorb the rain, could lead to localized flooding in low lying areas and water pooling on roads.
Trump Tariff Tuesday
Here we go – President Trump’s 25% tariffs are now in effect on Canada and Mexico. “So what they’ll have to do is build their car plants frankly, and other things, in the United States,” Trump told reporters.
Let the retaliation begin
Canada is ready to move ahead with its own 25% retaliatory tariffs on $30-billion worth of American goods including orange juice, wine, coffee and peanut butter. An additional round on $125-billion worth of other goods like vehicles and steel will hit in a few weeks. Prime Minister Trudeau is set to hold a press conference this morning to further detail Canada’s retaliation.
Ford fights back
Premier Ford is repeating his threat to cut off energy to the U.S. in a trade war and do it with a “smile on my face.” Ford again says tariffs mean he’ll tell the LCBO to remove U.S. booze and rip up a Starlink internet deal. “I’m fighting like hell, and we’re going to protect Canada. He’s underestimating the Canadian people, the resilience of the Canadian people, and the strength of the Canadian people.”

Former PM Stephen Harper is not too pleased with Mark Carney, accusing the Liberal leadership frontrunner of taking credit for work done by Harper’s former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who died in 2014. Harper also says Carney has been “wrong on all the big issues” like immigration and carbon pricing.
Pope latest
Pope Francis is using an oxygen mask and a ventilator to help him breathe after two episodes of “acute respiratory failure” on Monday afternoon. He’s been in hospital for 18 days. The Vatican says he’s “alert, focused, and cooperative.”

KEEP THE CHANGE
Car prices could jump $6K
As if auto prices haven’t risen enough in the last few years, but one research group suggests that the average new car price would jump by $6,000 if President Trump goes ahead with his tariffs. CNBC reports one analyst saying, “the auto sector is the most exposed to the risk of increased tariffs.”
Consumer confusion over “Made in Canada”
A Narrative Research report found that Canadians are more likely to pick a product that says, “Made in Canada” (37%) over something that says “Product of Canada” (23%), but they might not be getting something that’s as Canadian as they think. Something that is a “Product of Canada” requires 98% of the production costs to be Canadian, while something that is “Made in Canada” only requires 51%.

Quartz countertop concerns
A lot of us have them in our homes, but recent research suggests quartz countertops could be causing life-threatening health risks for the workers who make and install them. Breathing in large amounts of silica dust during the manufacturing or installation process can lead to a disease called silicosis which causes permanent lung damage and even death. Australia has become the first country to ban engineered stone to protect workers.
