For the first time ever, a sitting U.S. President is attending the Super Bowl. Donald Trump will head to New Orleans to watch the Kansas City Chiefs go for an unprecedented “three-peat” against the Philadelphia Eagles. This, despite Trump’s feud with the NFL and its players since the 1980s.

Super Bowl and snacks…some ideas!

Proposed U.S. “Trade Czar” gives some context

Jamieson Greer is President Trump’s nominee for Trade Czar. He appeared before a senate confirmation hearing on Thursday where he said universal tariffs need to be studied further and considered in order to bring jobs back to America. He confirmed that the President’s initial proposed tariffs were about fentanyl, that he’s going to study the balance of trade, and that countries must lower trade barriers to let U.S. companies have market access.

From one Czar to another…

The Canadian government is still trying to figure out who it’s promised “fentanyl czar” will be, but the Public Safety Minister says we’ll know soon.  The role was promised as a concession to President Trump to avoid tariffs.

On the provincial campaign trail

Tense takedown in Kitchener caught on camera

A Waterloo Regional Police officer is being praised by a policing expert for how he handled a dramatic arrest in Kitchener this week. Video shows a man armed with a hatchet approaching the officer and trying to fight him. The officer uses a conducted energy weapon on the man before he is eventually arrested by officers. Former OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis told CTV News Kitchener: “The officers showed incredible restraint… I was very impressed.”

A perfect credit score

The Globe and Mail has the profile of a man with a perfect credit score of 900, but experts say you don’t need a perfect score to get the benefits of good credit. Anything above 800 is “extremely good”, and only about 1% of Canadians have a perfect score.

HEALTHY START

An aspirin a day: potential risks

We’ve been told for decades that a low-dose daily aspirin for healthy older adults could reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by thinning the blood and reducing clotting. That guidance was updated in 2019 to discourage its use in people over 70, and it was updated again in 2022 to recommend against using it in people over 60. Seems the updated guidance isn’t well known though, with a new survey finding 48% of American adults still believe the benefits outweigh the risks.

Is MSG ok?

Despite its reputation as an unhealthy flavour additive, several health authorities including the WHO, FDA, and European Food Safety Association say MSG is generally safe, especially in small amounts. Several studies over the years backed MSG’s bad reputation, but newer research and reviews of how previous studies were conducted are changing the view of the common additive in Chinese, canned, and processed foods.

AND… ANOTHER THING!

Better as leftovers

Turns out there are health benefits to reheating certain starches. When these foods are cooked, then cooled they form so-called resistant starches which are harder for the small intestine to digest, allowing them to make their way down to the colon and feeding good gut health. According to Real Simple, legumes and oats fit into this category.
