Tariffs tomorrow | Flight recorders recovered | Winterlicious on in TO

Top of the morning! Cloudy today, H: 2 L: -6.

MORNING NEWS SCRAMBLE

Get ready for Saturday

President Trump says he’s going to hit Canadian goods with a 25% tariff as promised on February 1st, but he’s still trying to decide whether to apply it to Canadian oil. We’re the #1 source of American oil imports by far. He also says the tariffs might get higher over time. With hours to go we’re still waiting for word on exactly how Canada will respond.

Who’s going to be hardest hit?

Depending on whether oil is a tariff target, the top industries that will feel the tariff pain are oil and gas extractors, auto makers, petro refineries, crop and animal production, and aluminum makers.

On the campaign trail

PC Leader Doug Ford is doubling down on his major investments in EV production, but his rivals aren’t so sure. The NDP’s Marit Stiles says she believes in EVs, but wants to review the deals that Mr. Ford has done. The Liberal’s Bonnie Crombie says she’s concerned that Mr. Ford hasn’t diversified the provincial economy enough by deciding to put all the “eggs in the EV basket.”

KEEP THE CHANGE

Tariffs and the housing market

A popular mortgage broker says tariffs will hit the housing market. Ron Butler tells the Financial Post: “People are always going to be cautious about buying a house if they think their jobs could be in jeopardy.”

Time to renew?

Money.ca says the CMHC estimates 1.2-million Canadian mortgages are up for renewal this year and next, and thankfully this week’s Bank of Canada cut makes renewal conditions slightly better. They’ve got a list of ten things to think about if you are renewing soon.

HEALTHY START

Crusty eyes?

Health.com has a list of reasons why you might wake up with crust in your eyes. It could be as simple as not blinking in your sleep, or a sign of something more serious like a blocked tear duct or an eye infection.

Dementia blood testing trials start in UK

3,000 British patients will soon take part in a study where their blood is tested for biomarkers that have been linked to dementia in other studies. The hope is that a simple blood test will allow doctors to detect dementia at an earlier stage. Right now in the UK, only 2% of Alzheimer’s patients have a proper diagnosis partly due to a shortage of PET scanners.

AND… ANOTHER THING!

What a mess!

A New Jersey woman has gone viral after sharing how she regrets having hardwood floors and a sloppy water drinking German Shepherd. You can see how bad her floors are, but TikTokers are also pointing out she’s done nothing to mitigate the situation, like simply putting a mat under the bowls!
