Toronto snow removal underway | Black box recovered | Delays continue at Pearson

Still digging out? Toronto snow removal underway today

Don’t get caught behind a convoy! The City of Toronto says snow removal begins today and will take up to three weeks. Dump trucks will transport the snow to designated storage sites. The big dig will be done on a priority basis, meaning main streets with transit, hospitals, sidewalks and school zones will be done first. Snow-clearing continues on all roads, sidewalks and TTC stops.
Plane crash latest
20 TSB investigators as well as teams from the U.S. FAA, Delta Airlines, and the plane’s manufacturer are on site at Pearson trying to figure out why it crashed. Officials say they “won’t speculate” on a cause.
“I tried to just keep from hitting my head”
John Nelson was a passenger on the flight who captured some of the first images shared on social media. He describes what happened as the plane landed and says everyone was “relatively calm” and “worked together” to get out of the plane after it crashed.
Flight delays continue at Pearson

While the investigation continues, two runways at Pearson are impacted. This is resulting in some delays. Check HERE for the latest.
On the provincial campaign trail
🟦 PC Leader Doug Ford wasn’t able to get to an event in Sault Ste Marie because of airport delays.
🟥 Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie reached out to NDP voters saying they should back her party as a way to beat the PCs.
🟧 NDP Leader Marit Stiles says Crombie’s courting of NDP voters is just an attempt to get to official party status and her focus is on taking PC ridings.
Mark’s millions
Mark Carney has raised $1.9-million dollars from more than 11,000 donors as part of his campaign to become federal Liberal leader. Chrystia Freeland has officially reported $226,661 in donations, although her team says the actual number is closer to $600,000. The other contenders Karina Gould, Frank Baylis, and Ruby Dhalla have all raised less than a quarter-million each.
Pope pneumonia
The Vatican says Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs, which has required additional drug treatment. He is said to still be in “good spirits” despite his condition being a “complex picture”.
Meghan says: In with “As Ever”, out with “American Riviera”
Meghan Markle has decided to change the name of her new lifestyle brand since the old name, American Riviera, limited her “to things that were just manufactured and grown in this area (Santa Barbara, U.S.)”. Jams will be a big focus of her As Ever business.

Food prices drop
StatsCan says the price of food dropped in Canada for the first time in eight years, mainly because of lower total bills at restaurants. Overall, inflation last month was 1.9%. Energy prices rose, but they were offset by consumer savings from the HST/GST holiday, which applied to restaurant bills.
Surge in the number of houses for sale
The Canadian Real Estate Association says January saw the biggest seasonally adjusted monthly increase in property listings since the late 1980s (outside of the pandemic). The number of new properties listed rose 11%. The number of homes sold rose 2.9%.
